EM in Agriculture - Organic Farming

Effective Microorganisms® have been used in agricultural applications since 1982. Farmers have documented vast benefits of EM·1® micronutrient fertilizer amendment on 6 continents, demonstrating that EM·1® Microbial Inoculant works in all soil types, all farming systems and all climates on Earth. Today, EM·1®organic soil amendments are used in over 120 countries in all sorts of farming systems from row crops to orchards to composting to aquaculture to solid and liquid waste management. Whether conventional, organic or sustainable, any farming method can benefit from using EM•1® to improve the efficiency of their operation.

Conventional farmers can use EM·1® organic soil amendments for Agriculture as well as long as they do not mix the EM·1® directly into the synthetic agriculture fertilizers. If maintained in separate tanks and injected with water through an irrigation system or sprayer, there will not be problems. Do not apply EM·1® at the same time as pesticides as the EM·1® often neutralizes these petroleum-based compounds by the time they reach the field.

EM·1® produces high levels of polysaccharides, micronutrients, beneficial enzymes and organic acids that help build stable aggregate and soil structure. EM·1® bioavailable nutrients increase aggregate stability and prevent the pore spaces between the aggregates from collapsing during heavy, saturating rains, thus reducing compaction caused by machinery. Furthermore, improved soil aggregate stability reduces soil erosion and run-off. Soils are better able to absorb and retain moisture, as well as cycle nutrients.

The intended purpose of agriculture is to consistently supply food that is safe for consumption. The ideal form of agriculture, as stated by Dr. Higa, is to achieve not only food production but also to protect the environment, resources and human health while being economically successful. Therefore, farming with the use of EM•1® has the following goals:
  1. To produce food to maintain and improve human health
  2. To create a situation that is both economically and physically beneficial to both producers and consumers
  3. Can be implemented by anyone and has durability
  4. To respect nature and be responsible for preserving the surrounding environment
  5. To be flexible in accommodating the needs of food production according to population growth
When EM•1® is applied properly, we know with over 20 years of experience that EM Technology™ can specifically make the following possible:
  • Decomposition of organic matter (including organic wastes and residues) and the improvement of fertilizer effects
  • Recycling and increasing availability of plant nutrients
  • Fixation of atmospheric nitrogen
  • Suppression of soil-borne pathogens
  • Solubilization of insoluble nutrient sources
  • Production of polysaccharides and overall rich microflora to improve soil aggregation
Overall, the use of EM•1® is an economical way to promote a sustainable, resource-recycling agriculture that is environmentally friendly.
